Deck Maintenance Guide
At Dorset Decking Solutions we routinely receive inquiries from clients on deck maintenance. Whether you have wooden or composite decking, this article will outline a series of steps you can take to increase the lifespan of your deck.
A deck exposed to British seasonal extremes will require ongoing maintenance. You’ll need a consistent approach to reduce repair costs and help materials perform as expected over time.
Wooden Deck Maintenance
Wooden decks can be divided into softwoods and hardwoods.
Softwoods, such as pressure-treated pine and spruce are widely used in the UK due to their cost and availability, though they’ll need cleaning and periodic re-treatment every year. Popular hardwoods like oak, iroko, and yellow balau are denser and naturally more resistant to moisture. However, these options will still benefit from cleaning and oiling.
Without maintenance, softwood decks will last for up to 15 years. Hardwoods, meanwhile, can exceed 20 or 30 years in favourable conditions. Cleaning debris, controlling algae, and reapplying oils or stains slows surface wear and limits moisture ingress. Subframes should also be inspected, as softwood joists are often the first components to deteriorate.
Composite Deck Maintenance
Composite deck boards were designed as a low-maintenance, durable alternative to wood. Popular options in Britain, Trex, Millboard, and CladCo use capped deck boards that are resistant to staining, fading, and moisture. Regular cleaning with a mild detergent (such as ProKleen or HLS) is usually sufficient.
Composite boards often carry warranties of 20–25 years, though many have a lifespan of over 30 years. Lifespan is influenced by installation quality. Composite subframes and joists are increasingly used to reduce long-term structural issues, particularly in damp or shaded gardens. Where timber subframes are used, protection is essential.
Deck Maintenance Checklist
Begin with the basics and clear dirt, debris and leaves
Thoroughly clean the surface to prevent algae.
Inspect the fixings and board movement
Check the subframe is stable and free of moisture damage
Re-oil or stain timber as required
Wash composite boards periodically
In the initial build, deck tapes, like Walther Strong, are recommended for both timber and composite builds. Applied to joists, it protects fixings and prevents water sitting on the subframe, significantly extending structural lifespan.
